Repurposing Public Library Spaces: The Indian Public Library Movement (IPLM) Way

V K Vinayaraj

Abstract

The aim of this research is to identify the transformation of public library spaces on the basis of community needs. The study addresses the challenges emerging out of new services plan with the help of different stakeholders and provide required information to the community in problem solving and raising the quality of their lives. The research also focuses on what public libraries were used for, other than conventional purposes, why they were needed, and why they become meaningful entities for the communities from which they emerge. The study evaluates the pros and cons of a host of new services offered by Indian Public Library Movement (IPLM), supported by NAASCOM Foundation, in public libraries across the country and initiates efforts in understanding potential and challenges, rectifying defects, if any, in the roll out of new services and programmes.
